Summary

The Sign Painter is a Latvian tragicomedy about a young artist who bears witness to the dramatic political upheavals of the WWII era. As brutal regimes come and go, his country, his village, his people, and even his heart are swept up in the inexorable currents of history.
Ansis has an innocent occupation - he is a sign painter. His craft is in demand with the authoritarian regime of pre-war Latvia, the communists, and the Nazis. Ansis loves the Jewish girl Zisla but the girl's father puts obstacles in the path of their love. Following a chain of misunderstandings, Ansis all of a sudden becomes the boyfriend of a Latvian girl, Naiga. Between the three regimes that destroy his city and the two women who break his heart, he has to make one choice...
