Young European cinema in all its diversity and vitality again attracted the audiences during the two screening days of the "Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe now!" programme at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (July 3-11, 2009). The 12th edition of this extremely popular sidebar again gathered young film fans in sold-out cinemas and raised the attention of the international media.

Within the last two days, ten notable films from all genres made by emerging directors from across Europe (pictured on the left) and chosen by Variety film critics were spotlighted by European Film Promotion (EFP), Variety and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Three debuts and five second movies were among the selected films, ranging from the thriller The Children  by Tom Shankland, UK, to the musical Made in Hungaria by Gergely Fonyó, Hungary. Every film had something special, playing with everyday reality and genres in a unique way.

The event was highlighted by Monday night's party, hosted by EFP and Variety. This year‘s programme was also generously supported by the EU' s MEDIA Programme and Cinemax, the movie channel of HBO Czech Republic. All directors, accompanied in some instances by the films' actors and producers, were presenting their films in person.
