Alfred and Rita Allmers are a young couple who live on a island off the Norwegian coast. Their 10 years old son, Eyolf, walks with crutches following a mysterious childwood accident. Little Eyolf's accidental death is the catalyst that brings to light the problems in the couple's relationship, linked strongly to Alfred's ambiguous relationship with his little sister, as well as to the other dark secrets hidden within this family. From the moment of their child's death, his apparently normal family enters into a destructive spiral of mutual reproach and aggression that can end only when both accept and overcome their own fears and guilt.
