Born in Slovenia, Aleksandra Balmazovic finished secondary and music school before studying at the Academy of Art in Belgrade. After graduating in 1999, she worked in theatre in Belgrade, Sarajevo, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria and Italy. Her film debut was the leading role of the prostitute Magdalena in the Slovenian box office hit THE LAST SUPPER (2000) by Vojko Anzeljc. This was followed by the lead in Miha Celar's comedy AMIR and an important role in SPARE PARTS by Damjan Kozole, which screened at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2003. Aleksandra next starred as a tough Serbian girl in the first Serbian/Slovenian/German coproduction RED COULOURED GREY TRUCK by Srdjan Koljevic. The film received the Hessian Film Prize as "Best Film", as well as winning three awards at the Mannheim-Heidelberg Film Festival in 2004. Aleksandra also won two more honours for her performance in the film, the Queen Theodora prize and the FIPRESCI Award for "Best Female Role".
