In 1998, he had his first lead role in a feature film, opposite Franka Potente in SCHLARAFFENLAND (Friedmann Fromm). In 2001 and 2002, Daniel gave outstanding performances in several films: DAS WEISSE RAUSCHEN (Hans Weingärtner) won him the Bavarian Film Award as "Best Young Actor"; his performance in NICHTS BEREUEN (Benjamin Quabeck) won him the "New Faces Award" as well as the German Film Award; he won the German Film Critics Award as "Best Actor" for VAYA CON DIOS by Zoltan Spirandelli; and the European Film Award as "Best Actor" for WAS NÜTZT DIE LIEBE IN GEDANKEN by Achim von Borries.
In addition to these successes, Daniel's comic and touching performance in Wolfgang Becker's GOOD BYE, LENIN! won him international acclaim and many honours, including "Actor of the Year" at the German Film Award in 2003. In 2005, Daniel was cast in JOYEUX NOEL (Christian Carion), which was nominated for an Oscar, and in EIN FREUND VON MIR (Sebastian Schipper), working alongside his colleague, Jürgen Vogel.
For his performance in the Spanish film, SALVADOR (Manuel Huerga), which premiered at the 2006 Cannes International Film Festival, he won a Goya nomination as "Best Actor" in 2007. Daniel could also been seen in IN TRANZIT (Tom Roberts) and in 2 JOURS - 2 DAYS, directed by Julie Delpy, released in 2007.
