| Each year European Film Promotion (EFP) presents young, up-and-coming European actors and actresses to the international film community – press, industry and public – on the first weekend of the Berlin International Film Festival. By presenting the young talent to a large number of print and television journalists at a high profile press conference and to the audience prior to an official competition screening, EFP has demonstrated that its SHOOTING STARS programme can be an effective and original marketing tool for European films. With the conclusion of the 2008 event, where 9 young actors took part in this initiative, EFP has introduced in total 203 of Europe’s most talented up-and-coming actors and actresses to the industry, press and public under the SHOOTING STARS umbrella.
Over the past few years, there has been a surge in the number of international co-productions, many of which are cast with young, up-and-coming talent (for example, with former SHOOTING STARS Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Franka Potente, Ludivine Sagnier, Daniel Brühl, Elena Anaya, Moritz Bleibtreu and Ana Geislerová). These "young stars of the future" can have an extremely positive effect on the overall atmosphere of European filmmaking. EFP recognises the importance of this valuable resource as key to the successful marketing and promotion of European films
Complementary information
Most of the former selected SHOOTING STARS benefited concretely by the programme during the Berlin International Film Festival. Looking at the past two years 2006 and 2007 with a total of 46 young SHOOTING STARS, EFP has evaluated the following figures: After the programme 26 (56.5%) of the participants have been offered casting sessions with casting directors outside of their home territories. 9 actors (19.5%) were cast in substantial roles in international co-productions. Due to the new format of the SHOOTING STARS programme, which reduces the selection to 10 and the more rigorous selection procedure, EFP believes in an increase of positive results in the future.
The main sponsors of the 2008 event are Studio Hamburg International Production and Volkswagen.
