Introduction

EFP: an innovative network of European promotion and export agencies

European Film Promotion (EFP) was established in 1997. With 27 national export and promotion organisations from 28 countries, EFP is uniquely positioned to promote and market European cinema - and the talent behind it - throughout the world.

EFP’s mandate, as established by the Association, is:

- to increase the competitive opportunities for
  European films in the international marketplace;
- to improve access for European film professionals
  to the international marketplace;
- to contribute, where possible, to the opening of
  new markets for European film;
- to enhance the distribution possibilities for European film;
- to further share the accumulated knowledge and
  experience of the Association via its European-wide
  network.

EFP has sought out partner festivals and markets which are highly regarded - both culturally and commercially - by the international industry. In addition, the festivals offer a challenging and diverse programme of European films for the public. At all of its events, EFP also provides extensive services to European companies through the sharing of resources under the EFP umbrella.

EFP partner-festivals and markets include: Berlin International Film Festival, Buenos Aires Festival of Independent Cinema, Cannes International Film Festival, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, San Sebastian International Film Festival, Pusan International Film Festival, and American Film Market.

In addition, EFP organises stand-alone events, such as PICTURE EUROPE! THE BEST OF EUROPEAN CINEMA, a screening series of national box office hits in three European cities. The aim of this initiative is to circulate European films throughout Europe and to cultivate new audiences for European films. In the USA, EFP arranges Industry Screenings of European films that have a potential for the North American market. In 2008, the first session took place in June in new York, the second event is planned in Los Angeles during the American Film Market in November.

Since its inception, EFP has focused attention on the international appeal and marketability of young European cinema. EFP initiatives spotlighting Europe’s vibrant, up-and-coming talent-base have garnered attention and acclaim throughout the industry. From SHOOTING STARS at the Berlin International Film Festival to PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE at Cannes, EFP has drawn the attention of the international press and public to new European films and the talent behind them.

EFP is generously supported by the EU’s MEDIA Programme, and by EFP member organisations. In addition, promotion and PR activities are supported by the CNC (Centre National de la Cinématographie) and by private sponsors. The Hamburg office is financially supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the Cultural Department of the City of Hamburg.
